Tradeline Utilization: Why It Matters More Than Age
Tradeline utilization is the percentage of a credit card’s limit that is currently being used. When you buy a tradeline, this number shows up on your credit report right alongside the account’s age and limit.
A card with $500 in balances on a $10,000 limit has 5% utilization. That is a number lenders and scoring models want to see.
How utilization ratio affects your score
Your overall utilization ratio makes up about 30% of your FICO score. When a tradeline with low utilization posts to your report, it pulls that ratio down across your entire profile.
The lower the utilization on the tradeline you buy, the better. Look for:
- Under 10% utilization (ideal)
- Accounts with high credit limits relative to their balance
- Cards from issuers that report to all three bureaus
What to avoid when comparing tradelines
A tradeline with high utilization can actually hurt your score instead of helping it. Some tradeline companies don’t advertise this clearly.
Before buying, ask about the current balance on the card. If a company won’t tell you, that is a reason to look elsewhere.

- High credit limits ($10,000 or more)
