Primary Tradelines: What They Are and How They Compare to Authorized User Tradelines
Primary tradelines are accounts that appear on your credit report that you opened yourself. Things like credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, and student loans. Every account you’ve ever applied for and been approved for is a primary tradeline on your credit report.
How primary tradelines affect your credit
Your primary tradelines are the foundation of your credit profile. They determine your payment history, credit utilization, account age, and credit mix, which together make up the bulk of your FICO score.
The older and cleaner your primary tradelines are, the stronger your credit profile becomes:
- Payment history: on-time payments build positive history
- Credit utilization: lower balances relative to your limit improve your score
- Age: older accounts carry more weight in credit scoring models
- Credit mix: having different types of tradelines (revolving, installment) helps
Primary tradelines vs authorized user tradelines
The main difference is ownership. A primary tradeline is one you applied for and are legally responsible for. An authorized user tradeline is one that belongs to someone else, and you’re simply added to it.
Authorized user tradelines are commonly used to improve a credit profile faster because they allow someone to inherit the age, limit, and payment history of an existing account. This is why people buy authorized user tradelines, since building a primary tradeline with 10 or 15 years of age takes exactly that long.
Can you sell your primary tradelines?
Yes. If your primary tradelines are credit cards with a long history and a solid credit limit, you can add authorized users to them for a fee. This is how tradeline selling works.
At Tradeline Express, sellers are paid to temporarily add authorized users to their existing credit cards. No spending required. No money out of pocket. You’re simply leveraging the age and history you’ve already built.
Cards with higher limits and longer histories pay more. A card that’s been open for 15 years with a $20,000 limit will earn noticeably more per slot than a newer card with a $2,000 limit.
How to get started
If you have credit cards with clean payment history and at least two years of age, your primary tradelines may already qualify.
