Tradelines: What They Are and How They Work

Tradelines are every account that appears on your credit report. Credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, all of them. When people talk about buying tradelines, they mean becoming an authorized user on someone else’s credit card account to inherit its positive history.

The credit bureaus report the account to your file. Your score adjusts based on what that account adds.

How tradelines affect your score

Two factors make up roughly 45% of your FICO score: average age of accounts and credit utilization.

Adding a seasoned authorized user tradeline can improve both at the same time.

Your average account age increases because you inherit the card’s full history
Your utilization drops because you gain access to the card’s available credit
Both changes can hit your report within 10 to 35 days

The lower your starting score, the more room there is to move.

What makes a tradeline worth buying

Not every tradeline produces the same result. The accounts that move scores tend to share a few traits:

3 or more years of age (5+ is better)
Credit limit of $10,000 or higher
Utilization under 10%
Perfect payment history on the account

The company you buy from matters too. Look for post guarantees, transparent pricing, and posting windows of 90 days or longer. Longer windows give the account more time to report across multiple billing cycles.

When tradelines make sense for your situation

Tradelines work best on a clean credit profile. If you have recent delinquencies or collections, removing those comes first.

Once your report is clear, tradelines add positive weight to it. That is when the score movement tends to be most meaningful.

Common situations where tradelines fit:

Thin credit files with few accounts
Profiles where average age is dragging the score down
Someone trying to cross a specific score threshold for a loan or apartment

If you have derogatory marks that have not been addressed, a tradeline will not offset them.
