What an authorized user tradeline is
An authorized user tradeline is a credit card account that someone else adds you to. You get the account’s history, age, and credit limit reflected on your report without ever being responsible for the balance.
This is common between family members. Parents add their kids to build their credit early. What most people don’t realize is that credit scoring models treat family members and non-family members the same way.
Why tradelines affect your credit score
Credit scores are built on a few key factors:
- Payment history
- Credit utilization
- Age of accounts
- Credit mix
- New inquiries
Tradelines touch almost all of them. An old card with a high limit and a clean payment history can lower your utilization and raise your average account age at the same time.
How the authorized user process works
When you’re added as an authorized user, the primary cardholder’s account history gets added to your credit report. Most of the time this happens a few days after the card’s statement closing date.
You don’t need to use the card. In most cases you won’t even receive one. The account simply appears on your report and the credit bureaus factor it into your score.
Who uses tradelines and why
People use tradelines when they need a faster way to build or repair their credit profile. Common situations include:
- Getting approved for an apartment
- Qualifying for a car loan
- Preparing to apply for a mortgage
- Rebuilding after a financial setback
Tradelines aren’t a permanent fix, but they can give your score a meaningful lift while you work on the other parts of your credit.
