Piggybacking Credit: How Authorized User Tradelines Work
Piggybacking credit means getting added to someone else’s credit card account as an authorized user. Their account history reports to your credit file, which can raise your average age of accounts and lower your overall utilization.
How piggybacking credit actually works
The account holder adds you as an authorized user through their bank’s website or app. You never receive a physical card. You never make purchases. You just inherit the positive history.
Once the account posts to your credit report, two things change:
- Your average age of accounts goes up
- Your total available credit goes up, which drops your utilization
Both of these are major scoring factors that make up roughly 45% of your FICO score.
Who benefits from piggybacking credit
This strategy works best for people with thin credit files or limited history. If you have no derogatory marks and just need more positive weight on your report, piggybacking can move your score 30 to 80 points within one reporting cycle.
It works less well if you still have collections, late payments, or charge-offs. Clean up negative items first, then add tradelines.
What to look for in a tradeline
Not every account delivers the same results. The two things that matter most are age and credit limit.
Look for:
- Accounts that are 3 or more years old (5+ is ideal)
- Credit limits of $10,000 or higher
- Utilization under 10%
The older the account and the higher the limit, the more impact it tends to have on your profile.
Buying tradelines vs. asking a family member
Traditionally, piggybacking credit meant asking a parent or relative with good credit to add you to their account. That still works, but not everyone has that option.
Tradeline companies exist to fill that gap. You pay to be added to a seasoned account for a set number of reporting periods, then you’re removed. It’s the same process, just without needing a family connection.
